From my ongoing series, 'Portable Landscape or Landscape for the Traveler.' Before European contact, the Lenape Manhattan's original inhabitants called the island Manahatta, which means "hilly island." Lenape (len-AH-pay) means "the people" in their language. The Lenape spoke an Algonquian language, one of many families of languages in North America. There was a name that belonged to this land before the colonizer arrived with a new language and the concept of private property. English and any other tongue that arrived here came from another landscape and spoke of tales of other lands. This landscape has changed on the surface, and each layer on top of the original Lenape land tells the story of a city that whispers through many voices.
